Youtube will size this down, but everything should still be in frame. Accepted file types are: JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG.
For the Youtube channel banner (visible in your channel area), the proper size is 2560 pixels wide by 1440 pixels tall. However, in order for your banner to be seen fully, and not cropped weirdly on different devices, you should stay within the safe area that is 1546 x 423 pixels.
The best size for a YouTube video custom thumbnail photo is 1280 x 720 pixels.
