three different woman with unique facial characteristics and face shape

It’s time to find your face shape!

In total, there are six unique face shapes: oval, square, round, heart, diamond, and rectangle. Chances are, you’ve got one of the four most common: oval, round, heart, or square-shaped. You might have characteristics that fit into every category– confusing! Either way, we’re here to teach you how to photograph yourself the best way possible, with all face angles and shapes in mind.

Here are three quick and easy steps to find your face shape once and for all:

1. Where’s the widest point of your face?

From left to right, what section of your face is the widest?

If the forehead is the widest, you have an oval face shape.

If the cheekbones are the widest, you have either a heart or a circle/round face shape.

If there is no visible difference, then you have a rectangle or square face shape.

2. It’s all about Jaws (your face, not the shark).

Can your jaw cut glass? If so, you’ve got a heart-shaped face. 🧡

Is your jawline defined but not particularly pointy? You’ve got a square face shape. 🟦

Round jawline? Round, aka circle, face shape. 🟢

3. Length x Width x ??

Still unsure about your face shape?

Channel your inner Bill Nye and get measuring! 📏

Take two measurements; one from the hairline to the chin, the second from one cheekbone to the other (or wherever is the widest place horizontally on your face).

L > W = Oval face
L < W = Round or heart shape
L = W = Square face shape (within an inch difference)

There you have it, what’s your face shape?

Let’s recap quickly…

Round faces taper at the forehead and chin, with the cheekbones being the widest point on the face.

Heart faces are matched with wide foreheads, curvy cheekbones, and sharp chins.

Square faces have very sharp jawlines, defined cheekbones, and wide foreheads.

Oval faces have wide foreheads, with cheekbones narrowing down along a curved jawline.

Now that you know what you’re working with, find out what angles look best for heart, round, oval, and square faces. Whatever face shape you have, we’d love to see it and help you look your best!
