Facebook users have a limit of around 1,000 friends requests in queue and 5,000 confirmed friends.
Insiders (i.e. Facebook employees) say there are technical issues with bigger accounts, which is why they limit them.
For a while, Facebook was experimenting with lifting this limit, but it appears that they changed their minds and reverted back.
Now Facebook is encouraging popular users to convert their profiles into fan pages in order to collect more than 5,000 friends.
